Biography
Professor Ella Arensman is Head of the School of Public Health, Professor of Public Mental Health with the School of Public Health, College of Medicine and Health, University College Cork and Chief Scientist at the National Suicide Research Foundation. She is Co-Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Surveillance and Research in Suicide Prevention, Vice President of the European Alliance Against Depression and past President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention. She is Visiting Professor with the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention, Griffith University, Brisbane, and an advisor for WHO. Over more than 37 years, she has initiated numerous national and international interdisciplinary research consortia in public mental health, with a focus on suicide and self-harm surveillance, intervention and prevention programmes for suicide, self-harm, depression, anxiety, excess mortality among young people and adults with mental health conditions, and upstream approaches to mental health promotion and suicide prevention. Examples of research consortia and programmes include: Protecting Mental Health in Times of Change (MENTBEST), Early Identification of Suicide and Self-Harm Risk and Comorbid Mental and Physical Disorders: An Interdisciplinary Training, Research and Intervention Programme (MHAINTAIN), Towards Personalised Clinical Management of Suicide Risk through Data-Driven Clinical Decision Support using Transnational Electronic Registry Data (PERMANENS), Mental Health Promotion and Intervention in Occupational Settings” (MENTUPP) and Promoting Positive Mental and Physical Health at Work in a Changing Environment: A Multi-level Approach (PROSPERH). Prof Arensman has published over 200 papers in peer review journals and she has provided input into numerous mental health promotion and suicide prevention policy documents at national and international level, including Ireland’s National Suicide Reduction Strategies: Reach Out (2005-2014), Connecting for Life (2015-2024), Suicide Prevention: A Global Imperative (WHO, 2014) and Live Life (WHO, 2021).
