Biography

Emanuel Popovici is a Professor in Digital Electronics and Embedded Systems at University College Cork(UCC). Emanuel received a Dipl. Ing. degree in Computer Engineering (with a major in Hardware Design) from the University Politehnica Timisoara, Romania and a PhD in Microelectronics from University College Cork, Ireland (National Microelectronics Research Centre) respectively. His research interests include algorithms and architectures for AI at the edge, low power embedded systems, reliable and secure computing and communications. These are used in a myriad of impactful applications, commended for their diversity by many industry leaders, such as: analysis of neonatal EEG (leading to award winning start-up, best paper award, etc), smart beehives (leading to award winning stsart-up, best paper award, etc), smart lighting solutions (technology adopted by a local SME), IoT and Network Security (winners of an international competition during COVID-19 pandemic), hardware accelerators for finance (stock options pricing), wind turbines energy modelling (and also music synthesis from weather data), fire detection in forests and weather modulated communication, AI-enabled stethoscope for congenital heart disease pre-screening, automotive(Snapdragon powered F1Tenth electric car), smart interfaces for toys for children with disabilities, AR and VR technology in medicine and engineering, electronic design automation (highly prestigious EU FET-Open research grant i-RISC), etc). He collaborated with many disciplines across the campus and beyond, including: anatomy and neurosciences, medicine, physics, mathematics, computer science, applied psychology, biology/ecology/Earth sciences, civil and energy engineering, music, bussiness, architecture, etc. He has published more than 250 papers and co-authored 20+ papers distinguished by the IEEE, IET, MIDAS, ACM, and IARIA. His group achieved more than 50 awards and dis
