Teaching Activities

Clinical teaching lies at the heart of medical education and it is my belief is that every clinical encounter provides an opportunity to learn. I believe that in our interaction with patients we serve as role models to learners, and as clinical teachers must never forget this point in the professional development of our students. We want students who can problem solve quickly, be effective communicators and behave professionally. My teaching philosophy is student centred, using a cognitive apprenticeship model based on small group collaborative learning with onsite reflection. I became familiar with this approach as a research fellow in McGill University where I undertook a number of teaching modules including `Teaching when there is no time to teach' and `Actions Speak Louder than words: Promoting Interaction in teaching', `BEDSIDE approach to teaching and also the `One minute Teacher'. As a consultant in Ireland now for the last 7 years I have been engaged in many forms of learning: medical undergraduates and postgraduates, nursing students, neonatal nurses, midwifery and ethics students. My practice has evolved over time, and my teaching philosophy is student centred and reflective.Current Teaching Roles Undergraduate Teaching and Examining • CP4003 Tutorials Fourth Year Medicine Students • MX4090 Fourth Year Medicine Supervisor • CP5300 Final Year Medical examiner in Paediatrics • MX5090 Final Year Student Project Supervisor • MX5090 Final Year Student Project Examiner • Final Medical Clinical Pathway and Professionalism • MX2006 Junior Medical electives • School of Medicine Research Committee Postgraduate Teaching and Examining Royal College of Physicians, Ireland • Paediatric Higher Specialist Trainer • Paediatric Basic Specialist Trainer • Lecturer in Paediatrics and Obstetrics Ethics study Module • Lecturer Higher Specialist
