Biography

Dr Frank Crowley is a lecturer in Economics, Cork University Business School since 2007. Frank is Director of the Spatial and Regional Economics Research Centre at UCC, which won the UCC research team of the year award in 2020 and College of Business and Law research team of the year in 2019. He has a PhD from University of Groningen (under the supervision of Prof Philip McCann), MA (Economics), BA (Economics and Geography), Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Frank’s work is interdisciplinary in nature at the intersection of Economics, Geography and Management. He has published research articles in top international journals including Regional Studies, Urban Studies, Journal of Rural Studies, International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior and Research, Transport Policy, Journal of Transport Geography, Economics of Innovation and New Technology, Spatial Economic Analysis, Regional Studies Regional Science, International Journal of Innovation Management and many more. Currently, his research work includes examining sustainable urban development, innovation in offshore renewable energy, working from home transitions, automation, industrial structures, spatial economic resilience and family business innovation. Frank has over 15 years’ experience supervising students conducting empirical research. Frank is currently supervising PhD students that are examining a range of regional economic topics including commuting and sustainable cities, the burden of sprawl and city growth and competitiveness, automation, the economic and social burden of population loss and family business innovation. Research Interests

Frank’s work is interdisciplinary in nature at the intersection of Economics, Geography and Management. Currently, his research work includes examining sustainable urban development, innovation in offshore renewable energy, working from home transitions, automation, industrial structures, spatial economic resilience and family business innovation.

Teaching Activities

Frank has 16 years’ experience of teaching across a broad range of levels from first year undergraduate modules to final year undergraduate, postgraduate students, adult’s continuing education and executive education. He was awarded a Presidents Award for Teaching and Learning in 2021. He has taught in a variety of situations from large-class lecture (over 250 students in BA Economics) settings to smaller class settings in postgraduate classes, with international students and across many programmes. He is committed to teaching excellence and holds a Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate in Teaching and learning in Higher Education (TLHE). He is currently undertaking the Masters in Teaching and Learning. Frank has taught in Beijing, Zhengzhou and Shanghai, China (for UCC) to undergraduate students. Frank has played a prominent role in the planning, design and development of many programmes at UCC. Frank has research led teaching at the core of his teaching approach and he employs Gardners MI theory and Kegan’s constructive development theory of adult development in his modules.
