Personal profile

Biography

I am a nurse academic, appointed as Professor and Chair of Nursing and Health Services Research at UCC in 2023 with more than 25 years experience of working in advanced practice examining the role of advanced practice in relation to clinical outcomes, staff knowledge on these roles, education and training required to become an advanced practitioner as well as examining patient satisfaction with advanced practitioners. In Australia, I developed one of the first Masters programmes for Nurse Practitioners and also in the UK at King's College London where, from 2012 to 2023, I was the lead for Advanced Practice. My other research expertise is in workforce development and optimising health in long term conditions using shared-decision masking and digital technology such as apps and remote monitoring. I have also researched issues relating to cardio-oncology, advanced practice education, patient-centred care and chronic disease management. In 2018, I established a nurse-led rapid access clinic for patients with suspected atrial fibrillation at St Thomas's Hospital, London with the aim of assessing patients for stroke and ensuring appropriate medication is prescribed and worked closely with a clinical pharmacist. I am a member of the Council of Cardio-Oncology as part of the European Society of Cardiology. I have published over a 130 peer reviewed papers and I am a principal investigator on H2020 EHRA-PATHS study: 'Addressing multimorbidity in elderly atrial fibrillation patients through interdisciplinary, tailored, patient-centered care pathways.'
