Biography

Dr. Helen Hynes (née Phelan) graduated with a degree in Medicine from University College Cork (UCC) in 1992. She currently serves as the Programme Director for the Direct Entry Medicine programme at the UCC School of Medicine, a role she has held since 2024. In addition, she is the School’s Assessment Lead, overseeing academic evaluation and standards.

Dr. Hynes has been a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners since 1996 and has extensive clinical experience in both General Practice and Emergency Medicine. She contributes to regulatory and professional standards through her roles as a member of the Medical Council of Ireland’s External Assessor Panel and its Registration Adjudication Committee. Internationally, she serves on the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) panel of the UK General Medical Council.

Her professional interests include medical assessment, simulation-based education, and the integration and support of international medical graduates.

Teaching Activities

Dr. Hynes has taught and assessed on clinical modules in all years of the direct entry and graduate entry medicine curricula and is a Member of the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and the Medicine Curriculum Review Working Group.
