Biography

Dr. Helen McGrath serves as Vice Dean for Learning and Teaching in Cork University Business School. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at executive, postgraduate, and undergraduate levels in both large and small group settings. She principally teaches in the area of international marketing and business networks. In 2023, she was awarded a prestigious UCC President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (Team Award).

Her research focuses on network capability development in entrepreneurial ventures. She has published extensively in leading journals including Industrial Marketing Management, International Small Business Journal, European Journal of Marketing, and the Journal of Business Research. As a pioneer in connecting entrepreneurship to business network literature, she has developed significant international collaborations with prominent scholars. Dr. McGrath is currently leading a research project funded by the Royal Irish Academy in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh entitled “Actioning Sustainable Futures within the Artisan Food and Drink Sector”.

Dr. McGrath received a prestigious Government of Ireland Scholarship for her own PhD and was lead supervisor on a successful Irish Research Council (IRC) scholarship. She completed the Higher Certificate and Diploma in Higher Education Teaching in UCC as well as the Coursera Certificate for Learning to Teach Online to further develop her skills in Technology Enhanced Learning (accredited by the University of Sydney).

Helen regularly presents her research internationally and hosted the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Conference from UCC in 2021. The IMP Conference is an annual meeting place for over two hundred researchers in the area of Business-to-Business Marketing and is the largest and most prestigious conference globally in the domain. Dr. McGrath serves on the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing and is an invited board member of the International Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) group of researchers. She has held visiting scholar positions at Georgia State University, KEDGE Business School, and the University of Strasbourg.

Following the completion of her PhD from Waterford Institute of Technology in 2008, Helen McGrath joined the staff of University College Cork as a marketing lecturer. Helen is currently the Director for the Early Start Programme in Management and Marketing in the European Union designed for International Students who wish to be introduced to the fundamental concepts and practice of management and marketing in the European Union.  Helen is also responsible for teaching marketing modules both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  Helen was previously employed by Waterford Institute of Technology both as a lecturer and as project information officer for EnAct (Enterprise in Action), a micro-enterprise development initiative designed to increase managerial capabilities of owner-managed businesses in south east Ireland.  Her main research interests lie in the area of business-to-business relationship marketing, with a strong focus on the network approach as set out by the International Marketing and Purchasing Group of researchers.
