Biography

Prof. Gregorio Iglesias is Professor of Marine Renewable Energy at University College Cork, Ireland, and Honorary Professor of Coastal Engineering at the University of Plymouth, U.K.

A graduate of the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris (1992), he obtained his PhD (cum laude) from the Technical University of Madrid. He has over 30 years’ experience in offshore renewable energy and coastal engineering.

He was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) Individual Fellowship (“WaveImpact”) to investigate the effects of wave energy farms on coastal processes and pioneered the application of Artificial Intelligence to coastal engineering in 2008. He recently served as an expert witness on behalf of Spain’s State Ports for the new €700M breakwater at the Port of Gijón. Prof. Iglesias is co‑inventor on three patents: a wave energy converter (WaveCat), a hybrid wave–wind system and an artificial vision system for coastal engineering laboratories, and he has directed numerous laboratory tests of coastal structures and wave energy converters.

He has contributed to the IEC standards for wave energy device development (scale‑model testing) and to the Spanish Standards for Maritime Works (ROM). Prof. Iglesias regularly acts as a reviewer for international journals and as an expert evaluator for several research councils and the European Commission. He is a member of various Editorial Boards and serves as Subject Editor of Energy (Elsevier) for wind energy, wave, tidal and hydropower.

Prof. Iglesias has published over 300 journal papers and secured more than €70M in research funding. The impact of his research is attested by 17,617 citations and an h‑index of 78 (Google Scholar).
