Biography
Justin Doran is Professor of Economics, Head of the Department of Economics, and Interm Director of the Future of Work and the Economy in Cork University Business School, University College Cork. He holds a PhD in Land Economy form the University of Cambridge.
Justin’s research expertise lies in fields of regional economics and the economics of innovation. His research contributes to the development of theoretical/conceptual models and applied empirical analysis within these fields. In the field of regional economics Justin’s research focuses on regional economic resilience to shocks, such as employment outcomes during crisis and the potential impact of automation on labour markets. In the field of the economics of innovation he has developed an expertise in policy evaluation and has extensively utilised Central Statistics Office data to pioneered the analysis of public policy impacts on firms and society. His research has an applied focus, using advanced econometric and statistical techniques to analysis data.
Justin has published over 70 peer reviewed academic articles in such highly ranked journals as Research Policy (ABS4*), Regional Studies (ABS4), Environment and Planning A (ABS3), the Cambridge Journal of Regions Economy and Society (ABS3), Papers in Regional Science (ABS3), Entrepreneurship and Regional Development (ABS3) and Economic Letters (ABS3) among others. As of March 2026 Justin's research has been cited over 3,900 times and he has a h-index of 28 and an i-10 index of 50. Justin has received numerous awards for his research including the 2018 Moss Madden Memorial Medal, the highest award which can be presented by the Regional Science Association International - British and Irish Section, for the best article in regional science published in a given calendar year as well as numerous best paper awards from societies such as the International Society of Business and Entrepreneurship.
He has extensive postdoctoral and PhD supervision experience. Having supervised 10 PhD students to completion (across two institutions) and six post-doctoral researchers. These postgraduate students and researchers have been funded under a variety of schemes including the Irish Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme, Horizon 2020, the Chinese Scholarship Council for Postgraduate Research, Science Foundation Ireland, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Justin is an active member of UCC’s Social Research Ethics Committee and University Ethics Committee. He currently Chairs the College of Business and Law’s Research Ethics Committee. He is a member of the College of Business and Law Research Committee. Currently he serves on the Board of Cork University Business School and the College of Business and Law Executive Management Committee.
Research Interests
Justin's research interests lie in the following areas: Spatial Economic Analysis; Regional Resilience; Regional Science; Business Innovation; Eco-Innovation; Business Performance.
He has published work in these areas in numerous journals including the Cambridge Journal of Regions, Economy and Society, Regional Studies, Papers in Regional Science, Spatial Economic Analysis, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development, Business Strategy and the Environment and Economics Letters.
Teaching Activities
Justin teaches undergraduate students on the BSc Applied Economics and also delivers PhD level modules across the Business School.
