Personal profile

Biography

I am an interdisciplinary scholar whose work is located at the intersections of critical criminology and critical social policy. I teach various modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level and I supervise students' research, including at PhD level and I welcome new PhD Candidates based on my research interests and beyond. My thematic research interests include amongst others the intersections of the welfare state and criminal justice policy, rehabilitation and reintegration, higher education in prisons,  creative and participatory research methods, youth (justice) policy, the criminal justice voluntary sector and the role of abolitionist theory in research and praxis contexts. I am also increasingly interrogating the role of the criminological enterprise in reproducing dominant ideologies and social conditions, and I am fascinated by inter-disciplinary endeavours that engage on new planes in the search for better futures. My personal ambition is to contribute to critical carceral scholarship that addresses the lack of public empathy towards persons with criminal convictions. I am a founding member of the Irish Penal Abolition Network IPAN and I initiated and led the UCC-Cork ETB Prison Education Unit Inside-Out Programme since 2019. I was co-investigator on the HEA funded research project TOGETHER- Collaborating across prison walls and borders and principal investigator on the IRC funded project CLEAN SLATE CORK. As the academic partner on the European Erasmus Plus COPPER initiative, I contributed to the development of a European training toolkit on Volunteering in Probation.
