Biography
McGarry is currently the Director of European Studies at UCC. European Studies is a distinctive multidisciplinary academic programme (established in 1988), anchored by the School of History. The programme has a strong foundation in cross-departmental collaboration.
Educated in Ireland (European Studies, French and Spanish - University College Cork), France (European Studies - Sorbonne, Paris) and Italy (Social and Political Sciences, European University Institute, Florence), McGarry has lectured in the European Studies and Politics programmes at UCC since 2004.
Research Interests
Research interests include comparative European politics, party systems and contemporary Mediterranean politics and history (namely, France, Spain and Italy). Interests also include the processes of Europeanisation and European (Union) integration since 1945.
Having taught an annual Model European Union module since 2004 (culminating in several days of simulated meetings of the Councils of the EU), she is interested in Simulation Exercises (multifaceted role plays), particularly regarding EU strategies, policies and current affairs. These put an emphasis on a student's individual active learning process - including negotiation and communication skills.
Her primary research focus is on Euroscepticism and on the politicisation of European integration issues (especially in France, Spain, Denmark and Ireland). This relates to the doctoral research she conducted at the Department of Political & Social Sciences, European University Institute, Florence, Italy (under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Bartolini) [defence pending].
