Biography

Kathy Hall is Professor of Education in the School of Education.  Previous appointments include Professor of Education at The Open University, Professor of Childhood Education at Leeds Metropolitan University, and Senior Lecturer in Education at Canterbury Christ Church University. Prior to her work in higher education, she had the roles of class teacher, deputy principal, principal in Ireland. Her research seeks to develop sociocultural understanding of learning and pedagogy and she has published widely in these areas.   

Research Interests

  • Learning and teaching across the lifespan, especially children's learning and professional learning (drawing on sociocultural theoretical perspectives). 
  • Theory, policy and practice of language and literacy, especially reading pedagogy in primary education.
  • Curriculum and assessment in the compulsory phases of schooling
  • Inclusion and equity in learning and education.
  • Contemporary Irish childhoods
