I have graduated from University College Cork with an Honours BSc in Neuroscience and completed my PhD in MEMS at Tyndall National Institute/UCC in 2013. My early research spanned microneedle‑based sensing technologies, where I developped fabrication methodologies, surface functionalisation approaches, and characterisation protocols. Later, I worked on biosensing solutions, including microneedle sensors for ECG monitoring and an electrochemical bacterial sensor for deployment in milk processing environments.
Since joining the Photonics group in 2015, I focused on advancing biophotonics for clinical translation, particularly in the integration of photonics‑based surgical guidance into medical devices. Over the past decade, I have developed broad expertise in custom electro‑optical instrumentation, including optomechanical design, optical integration, instrument control and software development, data acquisition, and full‑system prototyping.
I am motivated to contribute strategically to the growth of biophotonics research and translation. I currently lead a work package within BioPhotonics group and two tasks within the EU PhotonMed project. In 2025, I coordinated an SFI Research Infrastructure proposal and Horizon Europe Innovation Action proposal involving seven European partners and collaborators in the UK and Switzerland.
Through sustained involvement in industrial and clinical collaborations, I have built strong relationships with engineers, researchers, and clinicians which resulted in invitations for partnerships in DTIF and other EU grants.
