Máire Ní Íceadha graduated with a B.Ed. degree from Mary Immaculate College (MIC), Limerick. She obtained a doctorate, along with a master's degree, in Modern Irish from University College, Cork under the supervision of Dr Liam P. Ó Murchú. She received research funding for her doctorate from the Irish Research Council. She spent nine years teaching Irish language and literature on the BA in Education, with Gaeilge and a second subject (4 year), degree programme at Mary Immaculate College, St. Patrick’s Campus, Thurles (formerly known as St. Patrick's College, Thurles prior to 2016).

Research Interests

Réimsí Taighde/Research Interests: My research interests include literary and social history studies of the post-classical era - of the Seventeenth Century and Eighteenth Century in Irish and in English, in particular, Eighteenth Century Irish poetry, manuscript studies and the manuscript tradition in the Munster province during the period 1750-1850.

My recent publications include an edition of a previously unpublished song composed by Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-84): “‘Araoir dam seal is me im’aonar’. Amhrán a chum Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin’ in Éigse: a Journal of Irish Studies, 42, (2025), 60-77 Dublin: National University of Ireland; ‘Lámhscríbhinn Ghaeilge le Mícheál Óg Ó Longáin bronnta ar Choláiste na hOllscoile Corcaigh’. Dúchas. Iris Staire Dhúiche Ealla (2023), 77-84 Cló Chnoc na Graí: Cnoc na Graí.

My main area of expertise is the editing of post-classical Irish texts, in particular, the poetry of Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-1784) e.g. ''Lá dá rabhas i m'aonar': Aisling atá luaite le hEoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin'' In: S. Newman, B. Ó Cróinín & Liam Ó Paircín (eds). Saoi na hÉigse. Aistí ar Litríocht Ghaeilge an Ochtú hAois Déag in Onóir do Úna Nic Éinrí (2018) Baile Átha Cliath: Coiscéim. Also, oral and written literary traditions of Sliabh Luachra. e.g. ‘Amhráin a chum Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin ar fán agus ar fiarán’ in Sliabh Luachra – The Journal of Cumann Luachra, Vo1. No. 20 (2022) 27-32.

Current research projects include: 2026 An article entitled 'Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-1784): scribe and scholar', based on my Conference contribution to the UCC Conference 'Daniel Corkery: 100 years on' (Cork, 20 April 2024), a forthcoming publication by Cork University Press.

I am currently working on editions of poems written by Aindrias Mac Cruitín (1670-1738) in collaboration with Prof. Pádraig Ó Macháin.

Teaching Activities

I am a qualified education practitioner with a BEd. Primary degree. I teach, co-ordinate and examine modules on Early Modern Irish literature, on Modern Irish language and literature and on Gaeltacht culture. Since 2020, I coordinate and teach: GA1008 An Nualitríocht: Gearrscéalaíocht (10 credits), GA1009 An Ghaeilge Bheo (5 credits), GA2029 Teanga agus Dúchas na Gaeilge sa Ghaeltacht (15 credits), GA2034 Litríocht na Nua-Ghaeilge roimh an 20ú hAois (5 credits). From 2026, I will also teach the modules: GA2040 Cruinneas Teanga and GA3034 Gearrscéalaíocht na Gaeilge. I also teach language tutorials in the following GA modules: GA3001 Úsáid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge (10 credits) and GA2001 Úsáid agus Cruinneas na Gaeilge (10 credits).

·    Erasmus Gaeltachta: Since 2020 I have developed the semester-long residential language immersion programme for Second-Year students (BEd. Gaeilge) in the Gaeltacht including Gaeltacht-based research seminars and projects.

In 2024-25: I conducted the On-line Seminar Editing post-classical poetry of Aindrias Mac Cruitín (1650-1738), in collaboration with Prof. Pádraig Ó Macháin attended by a PhD student Sophie Ní Riain in Roinn na Nua-Ghaeilge. I am a MA Thesis Supervisior in Gaelic Literature and Culture (MAGLC). I supervised the thesis of Robert Ewing Finnegan (2024-25) and am currently working with Pauline Griffin (2025-26).
