Research Interests

Professor Marcel Jansen leads the plant stress group in the School of BEES at University College Cork, Ireland. The research group operates on the interface between basic and applied plant and environmental sciences, focusing on plant stress physiology and sustainability. Key research activities relate to effects of UV radiation on plants, as well as to the use of duckweed in circular economy applications.

Teaching Activities

Undergraduate teaching My teaching philosophy is to develop a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary thinking, across organisational scales (gene to ecosystem), to counter lack of integrated thinking.I aim to: • generate fascination with the topic, • encourage interactive learning and critical thinking that empowers the student, • encourage integrated thinking across organisational levels and disciplines. My research focuses on how the environment drives plant responses. Examples of my research are incorporated in all modules. I also brief students about conferences that I attended and have taken students (3rd year+) to local conferences as part of research-led teaching. All these help visualise the “scientific discovery” process (skills!), trigger critical thinking (academia!) and create awareness that hypotheses change (antidote rote learning!). I teach across the entire curriculum, from 1st to 4th year, for which I developed tailored lectures, practicals, tutorials and research projects. Currently, I teach 1st year "plant biology" (BL1004), 2nd year "ecological plant physiology" (PS2002), 3rd year "plant evolution" (BL3002), 3rd year "aquatic biology"(AE3016) and 3rd year "plants in hostile environments" (PS3008). All 2nd and 3rd year modules are centered on the philosophy that there is a continuum between "molecular events" and "ecological consequences". Thus, my teaching aim is to integrate across different organisational levels, in a way that the student gains an understanding of the role of fundamental molecular and physiological processes in the context of ecosystem function.
