Biography

I am based in the French Department, while I also serve as Vice-Head (Global) in the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences. This follows on previous appointments as Head of Department and Head of School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures. My teaching and research focus on second language acquisition, sociolinguistics and study abroad, especially in relation to French. I previously served as founding editor of the journal, Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition (John Benjamins), and was Chair of the European COST Action, Study Abroad Research in European Perspective (SAREP). I have been President of the Association for French Language Studies, and was previously Vice-President of the European Second Language Association and President of the Association of Canadian Studies in Ireland.

- Second Language Acquisition, with particular reference to the acquisition of French; - Study abroad research - Sociolinguistics (particularly of French and English); - Canadian Studies, with special reference to the (socio-)linguistic study of French-English bilingualism, Dynamics of Canadian French, French Immersion Education; - French Language and Linguistics
