Biography

Mary is an uilleann piper and musicologist specialising in Irish traditional music. Apart from her teaching commitments she manages the Department's Traditional Music Archive and she curates the Ó Riada Memorial Lecture series. Mary learned her uilleann piping from the renowned Cork piper Mícheál Ó Riabhaigh. As manager of the Traditional Music Archive (UCC) she oversees the upgrading and digitising of recordings and she is engaged in the ongoing development of more effective methods of computer cataloguing and indexing field recordings and the many other, ever increasing, holdings of the archive. Mary has acted as archive adviser for the From the Sources project and she was a committee member of the O'Neill/Henebry digitisation project at UCC. She has published extensively in the area of uilleann piping and traditional music in Cork and North Kerry. She has also performed extensively from North Carolina in the USA to Warsaw and Lublin in Poland. Mary has worked as a music collector in North Kerry for Muckross House Library, creating one of the largest song collections in the country.

Irish traditional music; fieldwork in Irish traditional music; the music of north Kerry, with special emphasis on styles and repertoire. Collectors and collections in Irish traditional music. Uilleann pipes and piping - special interest in researching the history of the uilleann pipes. I have examined the decline and revival of the uilleann pipes from the early 1700s to the late 20th century. I continue to explore the history and importance of different pipers, piping groups and organisations. Due to my interest and involvement in fieldwork in north Kerry over a twelve year period, I have been researching new and improved methods of recording in the field using up-to-date developments in technology. I am engaged in the ongoing development of more effective methods of computer cataloguing and indexing field recordings. As manager of the Traditional Music Archive (UCC) I oversee the upgrading and digitisation of old recordings, and the ever increasing holdings of the archive.
