Biography
Mary is a lecturer on the BSc. Midwifery, Higher Diploma Midwifery & Post Graduate Diploma Public Health Nursing programmes at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. She is a registered RN, RM, PHN & RNT, and holds a Diploma in Public Health Nursing (UCC), an MSc in Health Informatics (UL) and Post-Graduate Diploma Nurse Education (NUIG). Prior to her academic post, Mary worked for over 25 years in care of the elderly and with mothers' infants and families in both the acute, maternity and community settings. She has worked extensively with parents on ante-natal education, parenting skills, breastfeeding support, and transition to parenthood, especially in relation to fathers and partners. She is currently undertaking a PhD Scholarship in Nursing at University College Cork. My research interests include supporting nursing, midwifery and digital transformation. I completed my MSc in Health Informatics in the Department of Computer Science in UL in 2013. The title of my dissertation was "An Electronic Referral System for Primary Care Teams: A Prototype Study and Recommendations" My PhD research is part of the JUSTICE in Healthcare Research Cluster, at the School of Nursing & Midwifery UCC entitled: "A day in the life…nurses' professional and personal caring and responsibilities during the COVID-19 Pandemic" exploring nurses' experiences of the caring role in the COVID-19 pandemic and critically analysing the transitional learning for nurses both professionally and personally during the crisis.
Research Interests
My research interests include supporting nursing, midwifery and digital transformation. I completed my MSc in Health Informatics in the Department of Computer Science in UL in 2013. Teaching Activities
I am a full time permanent lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery since 2023, teaching and examining across all four years at BSc Midwifery undergraduate level and Higher Diploma Midwifery postgraduate level. I teach approximately 180 hours, primarily on the BSc Midwifery Nursing Programmes. I also teach on the BSc Nursing, and PGDip Public Health Nursing programmes. Teaching includes lecturing, the facilitation of tutorials, workshops, practical’s and clinical skills and low and high fidelity simulation sessions. I am module leader on both theory and clinical practice modules from 1st to 4th year on the undergraduate Midwifery and Public Health Nursing programmes. I am a link lecturer with our clinical partner Cork University Maternity Hospital. In 2024/2025 I completed the post graduate certificate in teaching and learning in Higher Education, UCC.
