Biography

My research encompasses Ireland, the UK, Europe, and the United States, with a focus on modern and contemporary political history, international relations, and diplomacy. My interests include Irish foreign policy and diplomacy, European integration, and nuclear history. I regularly present at national and international conferences, and have delivered keynotes across Ireland, the UK, Europe, Asia, and North America.

Throughout my career, I have held multiple leadership positions such as vice chair and chair of the Royal Irish Academy's International Affairs Standing Committee. I currently serve as editor of Irish Studies in International Affairs. I am also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Dictionary of Irish Biography.

I have secured funding either as an individual, team memmber and principal investigator from the Irish Research Council, the European Parliament, the Department of Foreign Affairs, NUI, PRTLI, and HEA North-South.

I have supervised four IRC-funded PhD students, mentored a postdoctoral fellow, and supervised 11 PhDs, 2 MPhils, and approximately 200 MA students.

My academic leadership includes overseeing programmes in European Studies, History, Politics, Strategic Studies, and International Relations. I am the director of the MA in International Relations (History) and have led the MA in History, the MA in Strategic Studies, the BA in European Studies, and the BA/MA in Politics.

Additionally, I have contributed to many university and national committees, and served as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies for CACSSS (2018-19) and Head of School (2019–22).
