Personal profile
Biography
Professor Michael N. Sack is Professor of Clinical Trials and Director of Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at University College Cork and is academically affiliated with APC Microbiome Ireland. Previously he served as the Chief of the Cardiovascular Division and the Head of the Laboratory of Mitochondrial Biology and Metabolism at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda Maryland in the USA. His translational research bridges the gap between molecular and biochemical metabolic mechanisms governing immune cell function and metabolism in diseases linked to cardiovascular risk. His laboratory studies how multiple nutritional interventions impact systemic inflammation in these different diseases.
Research Interests
Employs the bedside to bench approach to explore the underlying mechanisms of human disease. 1. Explore the role of comorbidities and immunometabolism in the development of and progression of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. 2. Use dietary intervention studies to modulate immunity and cardiovascular risk. 3. Explore the role of the immune system in augmenting cardiovascular risk during the menopause transition.
Teaching Activities
Mentoring of Clinician-Scientist career development through his role at the CRF. Mentoring and training of graduate students with overlapping research interests.
