Michelle Carr is Professor of Accounting and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Cork University Business School (CUBS), University College Cork. Michelle is an established international researcher in management accounting and control. Her research focuses on the design and use of management control and performance measurement systems, their influence on organisational behaviour and performance, and the role of accounting and control in supporting organisations through uncertainty, crisis and change. Her research also examines accountability in healthcare, emerging organisational risks, sustainability and the changing nature of work.

Michelle has published in leading international accounting and management journals, including Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, The British Accounting Review and Financial Accountability & Management. She has a strong track record of securing competitive research funding and leading collaborative research addressing significant organisational and societal challenges. Her inaugural professorial lecture, Accounting, Management and Accountability in Times of Crisis, brought together key themes from her research on accounting, control and accountability in complex organisational environments.

Michelle is actively engaged with practice, with particular expertise in governance, risk, accountability and organisational performance. Her external governance experience includes board-level and Audit and Risk Committee appointments with UCC Academy, Cork County Council and the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, providing an important connection between her research and the practical challenges facing organisations.

As Head of Accounting and Finance, Michelle provides academic and research leadership for the discipline, supporting research capacity, mentoring researchers and fostering collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Her current interests include the implications of artificial intelligence, sustainability and the future of work for accounting, management control and organisational accountability.
