Biography

Dr Mutahira Lone graduated with an honours BDS dental degree from Baqai Dental College, Karachi, Pakistan in 2000. In 2004 she took up a supernumerary position as demonstrator in the Department of Anatomy, University College Cork. Having successfully completed the Irish Dental Council Registration exam and the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons (MFDS) and becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians, Ireland, Dr Lone worked as a dentist in private practice. In 2008 she was employed as a Senior House Officer in the Cork University Dental School and Hospital, and in 2009 she was appointed Senior Medical Demonstrator in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, following this with a position as a part time lecturer to dental students in 2011. In 2017 Dr Lone was awarded a PhD for her thesis 'Investigating innovative ways to teach anatomy to dental students'. Dr Lone was appointed lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in 2017, lecturing to Graduate Entry Medical students (GEM) and MSc Radiography students. In 2019 she was appointed programme coordinator on the recently introduced MSc Human Anatomy, a 12 month taught masters degree. Dr Lone lectures to the MSc Human Anatomy students and lectures dental anatomy and histology to undergraduate dental students. As a research supervisor Dr Lone supervises MSc students' research projects and postgraduate research students. Dr Lone received a master’s degree in Dental Public Health (MDPH) from the College of Medicine and Health in University College Cork in 2011, and will complete a masters (MATHLE) in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the Centre for the Integration of Research Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) in University College Cork in October 2021

Research Interests

Teaching is a continuous and life long process. Dr Lone is a passionate teacher, her research interests involve the study of innovative ways to teach anatomy and dental anatomy, combining traditional teaching method with innovative ways to introduce blended learning approaches, introducing the concepts of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the teaching environment. In 2017 Dr Lone was awarded a PhD for her thesis 'Investigating innovative ways to teach anatomy to dental students'.
