Personal profile

Biography

I am Professor of French and Head of Department at University College Cork. I am Deputy Director of the UCC Future Humanities Institute, Director of Research for the School of Languages, Literatures & Cultures, Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Languages and Cultures (CASiLaC) and Co-convenor of the Political Technologies research cluster within that Centre.

I warmly welcome all inquiries, especially from current or prospective students at any level, other researchers, the media and members of the public.

Research Interests

My research focuses on 'political technologies' across the following four principal areas:

  1. Modern and contemporary French philosophy, theory and literature: I have published extensively on the work of Jacques Rancière, among other philosophers.
  2. The psychedelic humanities: I have published an open access book chapter conceptualising patient autonomy in psychedelically assisted psychotherapy and an open access article on Henri Michaux’s self-experiments with mescaline. The political dimensions of psychedelics are a particular area of interest.
  3. Queer theory: Hatred of Sex (Lincoln NE: Nebraska University Press / Provocations, 2022), co-authored with Tim Dean, draws inspiration from Jacques Rancière’s Hatred of Democracy [2005], to argue that our society is organised around an aversion to the disordering effects of sex.
  4. Policing the digital: conspiracy theory and the politics of the mis/disinformation agenda.
