Biography

Patrick is currently a lecturer at the School of Nursing & Midwifery, University College Cork and he leads the MSc in Advanced Practice (Nursing/Midwifery) as well as the PGDip in Trauma and Emergency Nursing. His clinical background is as Advanced Nurse Practitioner at the Emergency Department, Cork University Hospital. He has worked and taught in Emergency Nursing since the late 1990s and was central to the development of the first Advanced Nursing Practice post in the Cork/Kerry region in 2005. He has been involved in a number of clinical, service and educational developments both locally and nationally and is a member of a number of national and international associations as well as having sat on a number of local and national committees. Patrick is registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as a Registered General Nurse, Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse Prescriber and a Registered Advanced Nurse Practitioner. His education has included the completion of a Diploma in Management and Employee Relations, BSc in Nursing Studies, Higher Diploma in Emergency Nursing, MSc in Nursing Studies and a Doctor of Nursing Degree, Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher education as well as a number of other courses. Among his teaching areas are advanced practice, trauma and emergency nursing, leadership and collaboration, quality improvement, referral for radiological procedures, physical assessment as well as supervising masters and doctoral research students. In terms of research, his interests are in the areas of advanced and emergency nursing as well as evaluative research and research reviews.
