Personal profile

Biography

I am Director of the Executive MBA programme at Cork University Business School, UCC where I lecture and research in a variety of Human Resource Management subjects. I previously worked at the University of Limerick where I was awarded the University Teaching Excellence award.

My research interests include gig work, algorithmic management and learning and development. My research has been published in outlets such as Human Resource Management Journal, Human Resource Management (US), Journal of Managerial Psychology, The International Journal of Human Resource Management, New Political Economy, and International Small Business Journal. I have co-edited a number of leading international textbooks with Bloomsbury, including Human Resource Management (3rd ed.) (2025), Organisational Behaviour (2nd ed.) (2022) and Human Resource Development: A Concise Introduction (2015).

I was recognised by the Academy of Human Resource Development with the 2024 Outstanding HRD Scholar Award and have also been awarded the UCC Research Supervisor of the Year in 2022 and the UCC College of Business and Law Researcher of the Year award (mid-career) in 2021. I have received best paper awards from Human Resource Management Journal, Human Resource Development Quarterly and Human Resource Development Review.

Research Interests

My research examines the changing nature of work and employment relationships. I have three interconnected research streams. First, I investigate the digitalisation of work, algorithmic management and platform labour, examining how digital technologies reshape employment relationships, worker experiences, and organisational control. This includes research on gig economy dynamics, psychological contracts, and how workers respond to algorithmic control. Second, I am researching chronic illness and employment, investigating how workers navigate disclosure decisions and how organisations can better support employees managing long-term health conditions.

Teaching Activities

I teach a variety of HRM modules across undergraduate, postgraduate, and executive education programmes. My teaching philosophy emphasises critical engagement with management practice, encouraging students to interrogate the assumptions underlying HR systems and consider their impacts on diverse stakeholders. Key teaching areas include strategic HRM, performance and reward systems, learning and development, and contemporary challenges, including AI in HR and sustainable people practices. I integrate industry practitioners through guest lectures and coordinate international study experiences that expose students to diverse business contexts.
