Biography

Rory is a graduate of University College Cork, with a B.Sc. in Applied Ecology, a Joint MSc. in Geo-information and Earth Observation for Environmental Modelling and Management (studying in the Universities of Southampton, Lund, Warsaw, Boston, and in ITC (University of Twente), and a Ph.D.(Sc) in Geography from UCC.

He began working in UCC in October 2009 mapping the distribution and condition of Irish peatlands for Friends of the Irish Environment, and assessing potential Irish geo-informatics sources to support their Peatlands and Water quality initiatives. He later explored the use of time-series remote sensing to identify and characterise distinct Irish vegetation phenology classes, funded by the Environmental Protection Agency through the Climate Change Impacts on Phenology project. Over 2010, he became involved in UCC’s Marine Irish Digital Atlas, providing technical support to the MIDA team and worked on a number of projects, including the SECAD Community Trails Development Project for South & East Cork Area Development Ltd.

Over the last decade he has supported and led UCC contributions to a range of European Space Agency projects (CCI-Soil Moisture, eSurge, CINMarS - Combining Innovation Networks in Maritime and Space, EODAT, and more recently the ESA Blue Economy project); E.U. Framework projects (SAFI - Supporting our Aquaculture and Fisheries Industries, CoReSyF - Coastal waters Research Synergy Framework, DOORS - Devoloping Optimal and Open Research Synergies, DANUBIUS-IP, Danube4All, and more recently the A-AAGORA project), INTERREG-AA projects (KETMaritime). He also contributes to two Service support contracts for the Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service and Copernicus Climate Service through the ECMWF, supporting independent reviewing of technical documentation, while leading service support to provide training and online learning resources.
