I have established and directed active research teams in my main research areas at both UCC and National University of Singapore and am currently supervising five PhD students and have supervised another 15 to completion. This research has been funded by grants from national and international agencies, as well as UCC studentships and travel grants. My research involves a substantial amount of fieldwork and I routinely carry out fieldwork in temperate (Ireland, Portugal and France) and tropical (Singapore and Malaysia) habitats. My research focuses on the following: · Temperate and tropical intertidal ecology- in particular rocky shores and mangroves. · Supply-side ecology of marine invertebrates- especially reproduction, settlement and recruitment of barnacles, molluscs and polychaete worms. · Biology and ecology of exotic aquatic species and their potential impact on native fauna, e.g. the red-eared slider terrapin Trachemys scripta elegans, ascidian Styela clava, barnacle Austrominius modestus and zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. · Climate change- the utilisation of intertidal fauna and algae as potential indicator species and the impacts of climate change on the health of commercial mollusc species · Behaviour of vertebrate animals in captivity (and their environmental enrichment) and in the wild. a) Marine research: The marine species that I and my research team have studied include crustaceans (especially barnacles), molluscs, polychaetes, sea squirts and cnidarians in European (including Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve and Clare Island) and Asian waters, as well as the parasites carried by
