Biography

Dr. Sabir Hussain is a Senior Researcher and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Pathway Programme Fellow in the Advanced Materials and Surfaces Group (AMSG) at the Tyndall National Institute (TNI) / University College Cork (UCC). Working in close collaboration with Dr. Ian Povey (Head of the AMSG Group at TNI) and Dr. Lynette Keeney, Dr. Hussain bridges the gap between advanced material innovations and cutting-edge device applications, combining expertise in material synthesis, interface engineering, and nanoscale characterization.
Before joining Tyndall in 2023, he served as a Research Assistant Professor at the National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST), China, after earning his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Beijing. His research contributions have been published in leading journals and secured patents.
Dr. Hussain’s excellence has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the SFI Pathway Grant (2025), UCAS Fellowship (2018), CSC Scholarship (2016), and the Excellent International Graduate Award from the Chinese Ministry of Education (2021).
Beyond his research, Dr. Hussain is an active member of professional organizations such as IEEE, AVS, and MSI, and serves as a reviewer for multiple high-impact journals, reflecting his continued leadership in the field of materials science and nanoelectronics.

Research Interests

Dr Sabir’s current research interests are;

  1. Atomically thin 2D-TMCs/ferroelectric/multiferroic materials, including synthesis via exfoliation/CSD/industry-relevant ALD/CVD approaches; characterization regarding their crystal identifications, properties; Elec/Optoelectronics and memory-based device applications.
  2. Elucidation of local structure-property relationships of the nanomaterials and heterostructures including atomic structure, charge states, spin and orbital properties; conductivity, permittivity, ferroelectric/magnetic domains structures, and phase transitions, investigated by multifrequency advanced AFM-based techniques.
