Biography

Dr. Shafi K. Khadem is an internationally recognized researcher and innovation leader with over 24 years of experience in the fields of smart grids, distributed energy resources (DER), and intelligent energy systems. As Principal Researcher and Team Lead of the Intelligent Grid (iG) Research at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC), Tyndall National Institute, Ireland, he leads multidisciplinary teams advancing technologies and market frameworks for the clean energy transition.

His research focuses on grid integration of DERspower conversion and control systemsAI applications in energy networks, and consumer-centric local electricity markets. Dr. Khadem has led and contributed to high-impact National, EU and Internationally funded projects, collectively managing over €4.5 million in direct funding and contributing to initiatives leveraging over €18 million.

A prolific academic, he has authored 75+ peer-reviewed publications, contributed to major policy reports (e.g., ETIP SNET Regulatory Sandboxes), and co-authored the IEEE International Technology Roadmap of Power Electronics for DERs. He actively serves as Associate Editor for prestigious journals such as IEEE JESTPEIEEE Access, and Nature Scientific Data, and participates in international evaluation panels including Horizon Europe MSCA.

Dr. Khadem is committed to fostering research talent, currently supervising a diverse group of senior postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and interns. His mentorship spans institutions across Europe and Asia, combining technical guidance with strategic career development.

He maintains active collaborations with academic institutions, government agencies, and industry leaders globally (e.g., NREL, UNEP, TERI, ICL, ESB Networks, Amarenco Solar), and plays a strategic role in EU energy platforms such as EU SET-Plan IWG DC TechnologiesETIP SNET and the IEA User-Centric Task GO-P2P.

Dr. Khadem’s work contributes to the advancement of flexible, resilient, and sustainable energy systems, aligning research excellence with real-world energy challenges and the global net-zero agenda.
