Biography

Dr Siobhán Lucey is a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry in the Cork University Dental School and Hospital. Following graduation from UCC, Dr Lucey completed specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry in the Edinburgh Dental Institute and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Masters in Clinical Dentistry. She obtained her Membership in Paediatric Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2013. She was been awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery by the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 2022. Dr Lucey has successfully completed the Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education with UCC. She is enrolled as a PhD candidate with UCC, and her doctoral work will explore the impact of learning spaces in dental education. She was President of the Irish Society of Paediatric Dentistry for 2020/21 and is Deputy Chair (Academic Staff) for the Mná@UCC Women's Network. Dr Lucey is passionate about the oral health of children and is committed to excellence in teaching and learning in oral health education.

Research Interests

Gender Equality in Higher Education ‘Future Proofing Gender Equality in Higher Education Institutions - Experiential Learning in Simulation for Student Leaders’ Dr Lucey is a member of the interdisciplinary LIBRA collaborative research group. Our multi-centre team has representation from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, University College Cork and Technological University Dublin. This pilot project employs world-class simulation technology to provide gender equality-based leadership training to student leaders in three institutions. This work is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5; 'Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls'. Dental Education 'The Impact of Learning Spaces in Undergraduate Dental Education' My doctoral research will explore the impact of physical and virtual learning spaces on dental professional students' educational experiences in oral healthcare for children. Following a scoping review of the literature to map the available evidence, Dr Lucey will conduct primary research to evaluate learning spaces in dental clinical education from the student perspective. Impact will be considered as effects on students such as acquisition of, or change in, knowledge, skills or attributes, or attainment of competences or learning outcomes. This research is aligned with SDG 4; 'Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all'. Patient Experience ‘Involving Children in Research – The ‘Friends and Family Test’ in a Paediatric Dental Setting’ This research-based teaching project for students seeks to explore children’s experiences in the student-led Paediatric Dental clinic in Cork University Dental School and Hospital.
