Biography
Sonia Monteiro is a marine biologist and ecologist with a Licenciatura in Biology Applied to Natural Resources (Marine Resources) from the University of Lisbon (1996) and a PhD in Marine Ecology from the University of Sydney (2002). Following her doctoral studies, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Guia Marine Laboratory, University of Lisbon, before transitioning into research support in 2008 as a Projects Officer in what is now the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences (BEES) at University College Cork.
Since then, Sonia has developed extensive experience in research support across several institutions, including University College Cork, Aberystwyth University, and Cardiff University.
Since 2017, she has served as Senior Research Grants Coordinator at the Sustainability Institute (formerly the Environmental Research Institute), where she leads strategic research support for academics and researchers across the Institute. Her work includes delivering targeted funding intelligence and supporting the development of competitive proposals for national funders (EPA, DAFM, Research Ireland, SEAI), EU programmes (Horizon Europe, COST), and international organisations such as the Wellcome Trust. Her core strengths include proposal design, budget development, and cross‑disciplinary research support.
