Biography

William Sjostrom is senior lecturer in economics at the Centre for Policy Studies at University College Cork, where he has also served as dean of the Faculty of Commerce and director of the Executive MBA programme. He previously taught economics at Northern Illinois University and the University of Washington, was a staff economist at the Port of Seattle, and has consulted for the Port of Cork, the European Commission, the ESB, and private law firms. He served on the editorial board of Maritime Economics and Logistics and is currently on the editorial board of the International Journal of Transport Economics. He graduated from the University of Chicago, and received his PhD from the University of Washington. He has published on competition policy in liner shipping, crime, unemployment, comparative competition law, and oligopoly in the lumber industry.

Research Interests

My research focuses on industrial economics, with a particular emphasis on maritime industries, as well as law and economics, and labor markets.

Teaching Activities

I currently teach industrial economics, price theory for government students, and the economies of Europe, all to undergraduates.I have in the past taught at graduate level price theory, industrial economics, and game theory for MBAs.  At that undergraduate level, I have taught intermediate price theory, principles of economics, mathematical economics, statistics for economists, law and economics, and European competition policy.
