Abstract

An entire family of high speed 850 nm vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VSCEL) capable of 10 and 12.5 Gbps was developed. The devices were fully characterized to aid in the developed of high data rate laser drivers. Initial VCSEL drivers were used to demonstrate 10 Gb/s operation in multimode fiber. Electrically and optically packaged optical sub assemblies were demonstrated operating at 10 and 12.5 Gb/s through multimode optical fibers. All the necessary building blocks are proven for 10 Gb/s VCSEL based transmitters.
