Abstract
Stillbirth is re-emerging as a major diagnostic challenge for veterinary practitioners and veterinary pathologists all around the world. Traditionally, the major causes were asphyxia and dystocia. However, recent studies suggest there may be an increase in "unexplained stillbirth" where neither of these conditions is responsible. This paper describes two of the more important known causes of stillbirth, asphyxia and trauma, and four of the less recognised causes, lethal congenital defects, omphalorrhagia, intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity. The key diagnostic lesions are presented by photographs.
