Abstract
This visual essay focuses on the war in Sudan that began in April 2023, and on the massive refugee crisis it has precipitated, leading to the forced displacement of over 12 million Sudanese people. It includes an interview with photographer Ala Kheir, who speaks with Safundi’s visual essays editor, Kylie Thomas, about some of the photographs he made in early 2025 in refugee camps on the Chad-Sudan border. The discussion centres on the difficult conditions in the camps and the struggle people face to secure shelter, food, health care, and an education for their children, while dealing with the trauma of war. The interview also includes a discussion of the far-reaching effects of mass killing, sexual violence as a weapon of war, and genocidal violence in Darfur.
