Abstract
The Peatlands of Ireland Mapped from Landsat Imagery (PIMLI) was processed to produce per-local authority summaries (statistics and maps) of exposed peat soil areas, for all county areas within the republic of Ireland. Quality issues evident in the PIMLI (such as % identified cloud cover, and the area left un-imaged in the PIMLI) were also incorporated into the local authority summaries.
Included in this report are the summary figures for all exposed peat soil areas identified in the PIMLI. Details of their locations (in both OSI grid coordinates, and Lat/Long degree coordinates), any information available on their ownership, and their area in metres and Hectares are given for each exposed peat soil area. Furthermore, each exposed peat soil area covering an extent greater than 50Ha in total has been given a named designation (pertaining to it’s Bord na Móna name, the name of it’s electoral district, a nearby highland area name, or nearby watercourse name), along with it’s association within groups of peat complexes (clusters of exposed peat soil areas near a pronounced landscape feature, or within a designated cluster of Bord na Móna peat extraction works).
This report is also accompanied by:
1) An excel workbook summarising the overall national area and information quality figures, and per-county summary figures for exposed peat soil areas over 50Ha.
2) A suite of 4 GIS layer products, derived from the PIMLI map. These are available with explanatory metadata sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the INSPIRE directive.
