Abstract
Breast cancer is responsible for 26% of all cancers in women and 13% of all cancer-related deaths in women. One in every 8 women is expected to develop breast cancer during her lifetime, and 1 in 31 women will die of breast cancer. The surgical management of breast cancer requires an understanding of the complete spectrum of breast pathology, both malignant and premalignant. Within this chapter, an overview of this continuum is presented: from high-risk pathologies, through preinvasive disease, to invasive disease and its subtypes. Relevant trials are presented, as are options and considerations for breast reconstruction.
