Abstract
In this article I explore the importance of place and place name in Peig Sayers’ work Peig: A Scéal Féin. I make use of theories from geographers such as Edward Relph and Yi-Fu Tuan to explore Peig’s relationship to space and place. Peig uses numerous examples of place names in this work, above and beyond the usual number of place name references in Gaeltacht literature. By reading her book from the point of view of place we gain an appreciation of Peig’s distinctive perspective and also an awareness of the importance of place name scholarship in literary criticism.
