Abstract
Is och im chliabh 's is diachair phéine, composed by head of the Carrignavear Bardic Court, Uilliam Mac Cartáin an Dúna, is the only extant Irish-language elegy composed on Sir James Cotter of Carrigtwohill, Co. Cork (†1705). An edition and translation of the text are supplied with an introductory essay that traces the life and career of Sir James, providing context to the environment and social function of a caoineadh or formal elegy composed on a Gaelic-Irish chieftain at the turn of the eighteenth century. The text is of significant historical and literary importance and hitherto has only been accessible in manuscripts.
