Abstract
A thorough characterization of the wave resource is fundamental to selecting the optimum sites for a wave farm and assessing its economic viability. In this work the crucial points for this characterization are reviewed - concerning the spatial and temporal variability of the resource - and a number of novel ways of improving the economic viability of wave energy are discussed, notably the combination with offshore wind energy and the application of wave farms to coastal defence.
