City of Difference: Mapping Social Exclusion in Cork

Research output: Book/ReportBookpeer-review

Abstract

City of Difference: Mapping Social Exclusion in Cork by is a socio-geographical study that examines how social inequality and exclusion are distributed across Cork City. Drawing on census data and other socio-economic indicators, the work uses mapping and spatial analysis to reveal sharp contrasts between neighbourhoods. It explores variations in employment, education, health, housing quality, and access to services, demonstrating how place significantly shapes life chances and everyday experiences. Rather than viewing disadvantage as an individual problem, the study highlights the structural and spatial dimensions of inequality, showing how historical development patterns and policy decisions contribute to uneven urban outcomes. By making visible the geography of exclusion within the city, City of Difference provides an evidence base for urban planning, social policy, and community development. Overall, the work argues for more spatially informed and socially inclusive approaches to addressing inequality in Cork City.
