Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore communication with individuals with intellectual disabilities as a basis for person-centred support. Effective communication will be examined and the importance of a rights-based approach in communication will be highlighted. Consideration is given to the impact of the environment, culture and values on practice and how people are able to support the voice and choices of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Awareness of practitioner responsibilities in promoting self-advocacy and active listening is also considered. This chapter will assist the reader in appreciating the importance of self-awareness, demonstrating respect, allowing time for communication processes and active listening.
