Abstract
This chapter provides the context to a study conducted in Cork City with city residents. It examines the geography, economic, social and educational landscape as relevant to this study and traces the impact of micro and macro-economic shocks on deprived communities across generations. The chapter outlines how housing policy, the presence and withdrawal of local industry and precarious employment impact the social mobility and stagnation of segments of the city population and how recovery from economic shocks is not evenly distributed across communities in the area. Finally, the chapter addresses social deprivation and drug use in Cork city.
