Abstract

A Swedish risk chart - SCORE Sweden - for cardiovascular mortality has been modified from the European SCORE risk chart. It is based upon mortality in Sweden from myocardial infarction and stroke in the year 1999 and cardiovascular risk factors from the latest Northern Sweden and Gothenburg MONICA population-based studies. The SCORE risk charts were based upon prospective studies in 12 different centres including 205 178 persons with 88 080 women followed for about 10 years. It was evident that the same charts could not be used in all regions of Europe. The risk curves were parallel, higher for the high-risk regions, but the risk factor coefficients were similar. Sweden turned out to be situated between the high risk and low risk regions. This determination of total risk for cardiovascular mortality gives indications for preventive actions also among people with only moderate elevations of several risk factors. Patients who have already suffered myocardial infarction, stroke or have diabetes are regarded as high-risk individuals. Special risk charts for these groups are not included in the SCORE charts, but within these groups the risk factors are still important and higher levels are associated with higher risk according to Swedish prospective studies.
