Abstract

The growth of gold (Au) on iron (Fe) was studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. Observation of a surface alloy for submonolayer deposition was done at temperatures higher than 370 K. The surface alloy demixed when covered with Au and in combination with imperfect layer-by-layer growth, a rough interface was created consisting of Au islands and Fe islands on the original Fe(001) substrate.
