Abstract
1. 1. Mitochondrial malic enzyme (MEM) in the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., is encoded by two loci, whose products are distinguishable by electrophoresis and combine as tetramers. 2. 2. One of the MEM loci is polymorphic in an Irish population, with two alleles segregating at frequencies of 0.45 and 0.55. 3. 3. The supernatant form of the enzyme, which migrates anodally to the mitochondrial form, is encoded by one or possibly two invariant loci.
