Effects of the intestinal microbiota on behavior and brain biochemistry

Abstract

Increasing evidence is emerging about the influence of the gut microbiota on the brain-gut axis, which has led to the concept of the brain-gut-enteric microbiota axis. In order to study this signaling mechanism, a number of approaches have been used involving animal models which examine the influence of the microbiota on brain function as discussed below. This review focuses on the influence of the gut microbiota on the gut-brain axis, bioactive metabolite production, and the use of probiotics to modulate metabolism and behavior.
