Abstract
By referring to his pedagogical practice in two different institutional and cultural settings, the author presents how performative approaches were applied to Irish theatre plays in which the characters are forced into making difficult language choices for themselves. He argues that in the current debate on multilingual language education important lessons can be learnt from the (Irish) past.
