Abstract

Reviewing Nancy Rao's Chinatown Opera Theater in North America in this Journal (vol. 71, no. 3), I made an unfortunate error. The language used on stage in Cantonese opera performance shifted from a kind of Mandarin to a stage version of Cantonese in the early twentieth century. I assumed that the extract from “Shilin ji ta,” recorded in the 1920s and assessed in Chapter 5, represented the newer linguistic practice. In my review, I stated that Rao's transcription could have employed Cantonese romanizations. But the singing is actually of the more historical kind, and so is quite correctly transliterated using Mandarin romanizations. Many apologies to Nancy Rao and to any readers who were misled by my error.
