Abstract
This paper provides an overview of how the Irish education system may have been influenced by developments in other European countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. It sets the context and reviews briefly the broader historical scene in Ireland during the period. The paper includes references to primary, secondary, technical and university education during the three decades under review.
